Imagine walking to your car, all excited to head out for a drive, or to work or wherever you have/want to go and you sit in the car, crank the engine and hear nothing. Nothing but the sound of an engine that won’t start because your car battery needs new life.

Knowing how to jump-start your car battery can really come in handy during such situations – of course you need a willing participant with another car, but we’ll not talk about making friends just yet.

If you know the right way to use the “jumper cables” to jump start it from another vehicle, a dead car battery will never worry you. However, there are a couple of things you ought to bear in mind before you reach out for those jumper cables, or it could result in some serious ramifications.

Here are the steps you should follow to safely jump start your car.

Before starting the process, it is a good idea to ensure that you have another car with a healthy battery (friends or strangers) and that the other vehicle has a battery with at least as much voltage as your own. Read the labels on the battery to know the voltage.

1)First, own a pair of quality Jumper Cables.

It’s always a good idea to buy a good branded set of jumper cables and keep them in your compartment. How do you know they are good? Well, look for a brand with reviews!

2) Next, ensure both vehicles are in Park or Neutral (for the autonauts love their manual cars) and the ignition of both cars is shut off

Both vehicles parking brakes should be engaged as well

3) Locate the batteries on both cars.
It’s usually in the engine bay, however, some cars have their batteries in the oddest of places (really!). Accessing the user manual in the glove box of your car, or a simple google search will give you your car’s battery location.

4) Attach one of the red clips of the jumper cable to the positive terminal of your battery
It has “POS” or “+” on it, or it’s bigger than the negative terminal. Ensure that the other side of the cable isn’t touching the other black jumper leads.

5) Attach the other red clip to the positive terminal of the other car.

No Brainer this.

6) Attach one of the black clips to the negative terminal on the other car’s battery.

7) Attach the last black clip to an unpainted metal surface on your car that isn’t near the battery

You can attach it to the metal struts which keeps the hood open

8) Start the other vehicle and let the engine run for a few minutes.

Have an interesting talk with the friend, family or stranger helping you and thank them for being so helpful

9) Try to start your vehicle.

It is also advisable to drive around for at least 15 minutes after your car starts to recharge your battery. If your car does not start next time, it means that your battery is not holding a charge and will need to be replaced.
